Seasons is owned by Jeremy Schaffner and Amanda Louey, who went to the School of Culinary Arts in York together. They became fast friends and wanted to open a restaurant. Their vision was for an upscale but casual and comfortable place, the kind of bakery you'd find on the corner of many bigger cities. It has a steady stream of customers who work downtown as well as locals, tourists and college students.
In addition to serving the lunch crowd in Gettysburg, they also cater, and customers can order cakes to be baked. Their Web site has a list of flavors and designs. Louey even bakes specialty and wedding cakes.
If you're just looking for a place to sip some coffee with friends, they also have a selection of specialty coffees, espressos and cappuccinos.
Some items on the menu at Seasons change with the seasons because much of it depends on what fresh produce is available. Schaffner said they take pride in serving as much local food as they can. They buy fruits and vegetables from local farmers' markets for their salads and soups. They buy the meat for their panini sandwiches, eggs and more from all around the area.
The panini sandwiches, on fresh-baked focaccia bread, remain one of the more popular choices, and the display case of Louey's cakes, cupcakes, eclairs and varied pastries entice those passing by on the street to maybe stop in.
I tried the roast round of beef on focaccia. It's thinly sliced and served with Swiss cheese and a horseradish sauce. As a fan of the sandwich, I can tell you they do a fantastic job. They have a selection of six panini sandwiches, the most popular of which is Seasons' Famous Roasted Turkey, served with mozzarella and garlic aioli, whatever that is.
Shoot, this is a fun food column, but I'm still a reporter, so I should at least Google "aioli" and find what it is.
Oh, it's a sauce made with garlic, olive oil, egg and lemon. According to the first site that popped up, aioli goes well with monkfish, whatever that is. Here we go again ...
Whoa! I wouldn't recommend Googling monkfish. That's not a pretty picture. But if you want to try aioli, or any of Seasons' selection of sandwiches or pastries, or just take a break and relax with a cup of coffee, then I would recommend Seasons, the place with a menu that changes with the seasons. Hey, I just got that.
