The sandwedge is a sandwich with pizza crusts instead of bread that's filled with ham, salami, onions and mozzarella cheese baked and topped with lettuce, tomato and the customer's choice of mayonnaise, Caesar or ranch dressing, or even pizza sauce.
A small, which contains four "slices" is only $7.50, and definitely worth a try.
I have to admit, I opted for the sandwedge because its name amused me, and it was one of the best lunch review decisions I've made.
Who would have thought using pizza crusts instead of bread would have made such a difference? When Dave and Sally Wallins took over Wallin's Pizza and Subs eight years ago, the previous owner had a similar version of a sandwich, but the Wallins tweaked it and made it their own.
And they say it's catching on in the Hanover area. As is Sally's homemade shrimp salad, which Dave said used to be served only during the summers but is requested so often it became a staple.
The restaurant is run by the Wallins and two employees. The pizza dough, soups and cheeseburger patties are made fresh daily. And Dave is steaming shrimp now on an almost daily basis.
Hidden across from the Reichart's Camping Center on Baltimore Pike, Wallin's is definitely worth the stop, even if for the two cheese pizzas for $15.99 deal.
Dave, a retired truck driver, couldn't stay retired long and fell in love with the business.
The best part of his job is the people, he said, adding that if you've never been in before he can tell as you walk in the door.
Wallin's deals mostly in take-out or delivery, which they do within a five-mile radius for both lunch and dinner, but there are also a few booths available for dine-in.
The five booths and one table fill pretty quickly during the dinner rush, he said.
The BLT was voted best by the FlipSide editor, mainly because it has crumbled bacon instead of strips, she said.
Wallin's offers pizzas with all sorts of toppings, as well as eight- or 16-inch subs, and sandwiches that could come on three different rolls.
